Processes involved in the Roof coating process

Roof coatings are a type of specialty paints used to protect and beautify the roof surface of residential and commercial buildings. There are many different types of roof coatings, which include elastomeric, acrylic, silicone, and modified bitumen roofing systems.

Roof coatings can be applied directly over an existing roof covering or installed in combination with new roof sheathing. They can be either opaque or transparent, depending on the type of material used.

Roof coatings have been around since the middle of the 19th century. The first patent for a protective paint was filed in 1892 by George A. Mansfield.

Roof coatings have continued to evolve as new materials and technologies become available. Asphalt was the most common material used for early roof coatings, but it had some drawbacks that led to its replacement by other materials such as synthetic rubber, polyester resins, and organic solvents. Modern elastomeric coatings are used almost exclusively for flat roofs due to their ability to stretch and contract.

The roof coating process has many steps, and each step must be done in a specific order.

The roof coating process starts with cleaning the roof. The roof is cleaned using a rotating brush and high-pressure water jets to remove dirt and other contaminants that could prevent the new protective coating from adhering properly to the roof. This step is crucial to the rest of the process, so it must not be skipped!

After cleaning, an analyzer determines if there are any issues with the roof that will interfere with the new coating. If there are, then a repair crew is called in to make needed repairs before moving on.

After any needed repairs are made, Priming the roof which is designed to ensure optimal adhesion of the coating is done then the roof can be coated. The first coat of sealant must be applied directly after cleaning. This sealant helps ensure that later coats adhere as well as possible to the existing layer of sealant, which will help to prevent leaks from occurring in the future.

If all goes well with the first application of sealant, then two more layers of sealant can be applied within a period of time. During the cause of this process applying an elastomeric coating to the roof takes place. This layer will protect the roof from UV radiation and from moisture damage. Once this layer has dried, a reflective layer of metal is added to increase energy efficiency.

Finally, a protective clear coat is applied over the metal layer to resist the UV rays of the sun and provide additional protection against moisture damage then, we clean off any excess debris and we’re done!

Looking to convert that shingled roof into a smooth, sleek, waterproof, and energy-efficient surface?
